  1. Powerkompany CD Release
    powerkompany

Powerkompany’s Marie Davon is a pixie engulfed by emerald waters and ancient mountains. The deep thrum of her baritone ukulele vibrates back and forth through time. She’s dreaming. She’s awake. She’s on an ivy-choked front porch in Athens, Ga., bandmate Andrew Heaton at her side. He is the missing piece to her creative jigsaw puzzle—towering, dusky, his leather boots stomping between guitar strums while cicadas and surging electricity create a hypnotic rhythm track.

The band’s debut LP, I Am More Than This (out May 7), is futuristic, nostalgic, electric—Davon’s voice cascades like a waterfall one minute and the next punctures eardrums as if Cupid’s arrow to an unsuspecting heart. It is Dolly Parton’s frail warble filtered through Warhol’s Factory, the sound of tiny incandescent angels trapped like butterflies in a moonshine mason jar. On the new record, Davon’s melodies are draped by sonic tapestries as if the band had just conjured 1960s Phil Spector, held a gun to his head and demanded he update the Wall of Sound for a new generation.
I Am More Than This is propelled by loping beats, bounding through cinematic vistas of a New South. The album’s fragile, triumphant daydream pop and fanciful Catherine-wheel anthems illuminate man, woman and machine with acoustic serenity and cacophonous synths. Together Davon and Heaton, are scientists, alchemists, creative escapists. Before they formed Powerkompany, they played with other notable Athens, Ga., bands: Davon, orchestra pop outfit Venice Is Sinking; and Heaton, full-tilt bluegrass project Packway Handle Band. Bridging the divergent worlds of indie rock and Americana, the two found each others’ muses in full synch.
For Heaton, his musical partnership with Davon has provided an outlet for his more serious, dramatic side. In 2011, they made a spontaneous EP calledComfort. It captures the band’s nascent, ethereal sound—the aural equivalent of Ansel Adams’ stark landscape photography. A set of daring remixes, Pulse, was released the following year. And now, I Am More Than This finds Powerkompany moving in a relatively terrestrial direction.
The songs on the new album were written by Davon during a tumultuous three-month span, a period of motion and transition—moving to a different house, connecting with strange new people and processing all of the wild, perspective-shifting experiences that ensued. As a result, the record is frenetic—at times angry, blindsided and defiant, but also obsessed with freedom, hope and new beginnings.
Many of the songs on the new record were written to have an anthemic optimism, Heaton says. Lead single “Not the Last” is a perfect example. The song is in E flat major, a historically triumphant key—the key of love and devotion, of intimate conversation with God. From Beethoven’s Emeperor Concerto to Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony and Strauss’ Hero’s Life, the explosive “Not the Last” and its trumpet-like fanfare are tied to an ancient tradition of bold and courageous sounds.
It’s all of a piece with the record’s multi-layered, wide-open title, which—depending on the context—is a refusal to be casually filed away; aggression and anger at the world for not offering the benefit of the doubt, and at one’s self over perceived shortcomings and failures; an aching, deeply sincere plea for human connection, acceptance and understanding; a cry of hope and determination, to carry on, to be a more complete version of one’s self.

  1. Anders & Kendall
    anderskendall

February 2013 marked the release of “Wild Chorus,” a new record from longtime collaborators Anders Parker (Varnaline, Space Needle, New Multitudes) and Kendall Meade (Masscott, Sparklehorse, Helium). The record is what you would expect from two of the most respectful and tuneful voiced in indie-pop, and much more.

Anders’ rough-hawn voice blends perfectally with Kendall’s more delicate phrasings, recalling classic duets from Richard and Linda Thompson to Glen Hansard and Markita Irglova. Scott Miner’s spot on production, and a cast of stellar Knoxville musicians make Wild Chorus a true classic.

Originally founded in New Orleans by Percussionist and Composer, Louis Romanos, the Louis Romanos Quartet (LRQ) relocated to beautiful Athens, Georgia after Katrina flooded New Orleans in 2005.   The music that Louis composes reinterprets both traditional and modern jazz, interweaving Latin, bebop, and New Orleans street beat rhythms with profound melodies and dysfunctional harmonies, creating a playful, rhythmically driven, and compelling sound.    After  studying drums with Idris Muhammad, John Vidacovich, Jim Atwood and Art Perretta, Louis went on to record and/or perform with many great musicians including Gene Bertoncini, Steve Masakowski, Keith Richards, John Mayer, Chuck Leavell, Earl Turbinton, Victor Atkins, Dave Easley, Charlie Miller, Al Hirt, Joel Frahm, John Hebert, Charles Neville, Stanton Moore, Jonathan Byrd.  In Athens Louis toured with Dromedary Quartet and recorded with Chuck Leavell.

  1. Lefty Hathaway w/ The Welfare Liners
    leftypromo

Since arriving in Athens, Lefty has played with many talented local musicians, establishing himself as part of the hard-working Classic City’s music community. Local journalists have coined him as a force on the keys, layering elements of funky jazz tied in with roots-y soul. Lefty and his band have been compared to artists like Little Feat, JJ Cale, Leon Russell, Allman Brothers, Dr. John, The Meters, and even Bill WIthers.

The debut full length LP “Shacks” (Plough Lane Records 2012) is a barrel house of emotion spawning from an 18 month session at The Quad & Vision Sound Lab in Nashville, TN and Full Moon Studios in Lefty’s hometown of Athens, GA. The revamped line up features Mike Strickland (Tent City,Efren), Greg Kearney (Tent City, Betsy Franck) Greg Cooler (Tent CIty, Other Brothers Band), Daniel Bell (Betsy Kingston, Connected Houses) and Lefty. Check out some free live music at www.leftyhathaway.com.

The Welfare Liners came together from the eclectic Athens, GA music scene in 2010 and combined contemporary and traditional influences to create a brand of bluegrass that has earned praise from young and old. After releasing a self-titled, six-song EP on Ghostmeat Records in 2011, the band found themselves sharing the stage with the likes of The Del McCoury Band, Dawes and Drew Emmitt (Leftover Salmon). As they continued to perform at bluegrass festivals and local clubs, original compositions made their way in to sets previously dominated by standards from Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and The Stanley Brothers. These new, original songs borrowed heavily from the tradition of brother harmony mastered by Jim & Jesse and The Louvin Brothers, whose songs were also mainstays of early performances by the band.

  1. Hot Corner Fest, HEAP and Kyshona Armstrong
    Kyshona

A 9 piece HEAP-ing helping of original indie-soul stew- the HEAP played its first show in May 2007.  In 2008, The HEAP released their independent debut- Deluxe, co- produced by Matt Yelton (Pixies) and Bill Doss (Apples in Stereo).  In 2009, the HEAP was nominated for a Flagpole Music Award in the Funk/Jam category along with Widespread Panic.

The HEAP’s sound is something new, yet not  unfamiliar.  Howard’s baritone vocal delivery combined with crunched out tenor bass, soulful keys, the HEAP Horns’ punctuated harmony riffing, and laid back upright bass grooves underpinned by dance friendly percussion yield a sound that distinctly recalls southern soul roots while never letting you forget that we are “in the future now!”

Kyshona Armstrong, a music therapist gone rogue, hails from the  small town of Irmo, SC (home of Vanna White and the Okra Strut).  She  grew up listening to her grandfathers singing in the gospel choir, aunts and uncles singing old Sam Cooke tunes around the electric guitar amps, and her father practicing the guitar solo from “Hello” by Lionel Richie… on repeat.

Kyshona has mixed her love of story telling with  the sound of her musical roots.  Soulful, spiritual, at times guttural,  Kyshona delivers an open honesty through her voice and lyrics. Her  desire when she is performing is to connect with and take the audience  on an emotional, soul stirring, musical journey. Her goal is to leave a  crowd impressed.

  1. Matt Joiner Band w/ Rollin’ Home
    mattjoinerband

With apologies to George Thorogood, not every great Blues musician is born bad to the bone.  Find the nurse that worked the graveyard shift in the maternity ward at St. Mary’s Hospital on June 18, 1982 and she probably won’t have that story to tell about young Matt Joiner.

How would they know the crying babe would become the musical pride of tiny Colbert, Georgia? Joiner’s music blends slick licks and gritty narratives, informed by down-home comforts like those hot dogs from Billy Meadows filling station on Highway 72 and the solemn Sunday sermons of Brother Pike in a sanctuary his teenage hands helped create called Little Bethlehem. Seriously.

That was back when…  Way back when.

His father and brother taught him a few chords. A music teacher at school named Doyle Lightfoot, a thumb-picking guitarist in the style of Chet Atkins, taught him a few more. He sneaked a few listens of Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 and introduced himself to secular music. His new musical interests quickly became the fledgling musicians primary influences: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson…  Soon enough he was playing everyday, challenging his ear, writing licks and learning to shred.

Expanding his horizons in 2012, first adding a rock solid rhythm section (drummer Mark Turiano and bassist Clay Hinson) then talented keyboardist Natalie McClure, Joiner and his new band independently released thier solo debut album Back When, produced by John Keane (REM, Widespread Panic, Cowboy Junkies).  Naturally, they started touring relentlessly, building an impressive fan-base and reaching audiences with a critically acclaimed blues-rock style.

Joiner has played to enthusiastic crowds at venues and events around the Southeast including the Georgia Theatre, Soho, The 40 Watt Club, Melting Point and AthFest. He has also shared the stage with notablle local and national artists inclusing Rollin’ Home, Clay Leverett & Friends, The Rattlers, Matt Schofield, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ and the legendary Geoff Achison.

The Athens, Georgia-based band has one foot in the garage with their sights set on arenas coast to coast.

  1. Photo Ops and Foe Destroyer
    photo ops

Photo Ops is the stunning, contemplative dream pop project of Terry Price, whose new album,
How To Say Goodbye, draws on the tragedy and triumph of his recent past. The 30-year-old
Nashville singer-songwriter, formerly of esteemed indie act Oblio, has had a traumatizing few
years, including the death of his father and the sudden onset of a disfiguring medical condition.

“I wanted to have a stylized, melodic, easy-to-understand album about sadness and pain and
strangeness, and somehow find some catharsis,” he says. Indeed the concise and beautiful work
    – which draws on influences from Phil Spector, Paul Simon, Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac to
dream pop acts of The Radio Dept. and Starflyer 59– is his attempt to move forward in his life
    and give comfort to others.

Nate Currin is an enigma: with each album he releases he evolves as a musician, a performer, and a storyteller. Catchy enough to be featured on MTV, Nate still posses a raw passion that is only felt after watching him perform live. Having played hundreds of shows across the US over the past 6 years, sharing the stage with everyone from Blues Traveler to Neon Trees, Nate has established a grassroots following that not only allows him to play established venues from coast to coast but plenty of house concerts along the way. Nate’s third full-length studio album, The Pilgrim is set to hit retailers this summer – a follow up to 2011’s Goodnight California, which received strong reviews nationwide. “I strongly feel that Nate Currin is the most refreshing talent I’ve heard since I left radio in 2008” says Rhubarb Jones, a 3 time national disc jockey of the year and voted one of the most influential radio personalities of the last century, “He writes and performs with brilliance!” And it is that brilliance that will draw you in to Nate’s music, captivate you throughout his performance, and then leave you wanting more… Here are a few video links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSWhuvAg29o&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2vXBhUZ54Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRUZROB5pbw

  1. Danielle Howle + Firework Show
    Danielle Howle new
Considered by many to be South Carolina’s best kept musical secret, Danielle Howle is a punk rock girl with the voice of a honkeytonk angel. As comfortable sharing the stage with Bob Dylan as Fugazi, she has garnered worldwide acclaim while somehow remaining under the radar of mainstream America. Now is the time for South Carolina to share it’s secret with the rest of America.
Danielle Howle has now surpassed all efforts by teaming up with Charleston City Paper’s best experimental act of 2011, Firework Show, as her backing band.  The results have been stunning, and the pairing recently served as the opening band for the sold out Avett Brothers show at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, SC on New Years Eve 2011-12.  Danielle Howle + Firework Show also released an album in 2012, “New Year Revolutions”, which can be heard at the Bandcamp link below.

  1. Baghouse w/ The Odd Trio
    baghouse

    It is happening again.

All hyperbole aside, drummer, Andy Robison (Polemic, Norma Rae, Morte Sicura) and Jeff Rieter (the

HEAP, Bain Mattox, Hey, Revolution!, Diet Rockstar) have started rehearsing and recording with former

collaborator, Moog guitar improviser, Jeff McLeod (Zepubicle, No, Bert) of Montgomery, AL.

From 1999-2001, this line up of Baghouse performed at SXSW2000 (in the jazz category) and toured

around the region making improvised rhythmic experimental music that was somewhere between jazz and

ambient post rock with hints of proto live electronica thrown in here and there. Around that period, Baghouse

supported national acts including: Galactic, Lake Trout, Drums and Tuba, Auktyon, Robert Walter and Tim

Reynolds. Baghouse recorded an ep with Jamie Uertz and Lynn Bridges (who later worked with Anthrax,

Blind Melon and Devendra Banhart) tracks from which are available digitally for the first time on Bandcamp

    and Soundcloud.

Fast forward to 2013, the trio is booking shows for the first time in 12 years, having collectively absorbed the

    last decade.

    The Odd Trio

The word fusion was created for bands like the Odd Trio. Brian Smith, Marc Gilley and Todd Mueller are classically trained musicians who slip easily between a wide range of genres, subverting each genre’s stylistic cues and range of expression for a higher purpose. The members of the Odd Trio have honed a very close improvisatory musical language and are always looking to the future though keenly aware of tradition.
